Thank You Ngaire

“The journey of a thousand miles begins with one step …” Lao Tzu.

The wisdom of these words encapsulates in a phrase the journey of the last five years of our Ru Whenua Kaitoko Whanau Ora Kaimahi, Ngaire Briggs. It was the catastrophic events of the 2010 and 2011 earthquakes that thrust Ngaire into the Te Ora Hou Whānau Ora space, where she has flourished. Two significant Whānau Ora contributions Ngaire has made have been the development of Whānau Path plans and Te Ipu Oranga file management boxes. These simple tools have allowed Ngaire to sit at many whānau tables, to hear their stories of hardship and share many coffees and tears but also to celebrate their successes and triumphs.

Five years on and Ngaire is responding to the karanga of her people, of Te Rūnanga o Koukourārata to be their Whānau Navigator and assist their Whānau Mauriora. It is therefore with great sadness we farewell our Ngāi Tahu princess but it is also with great pride that we koha her back to her whānau hapu iwi confident and assured of her own mauriora.

“Whāia te iti kahurangi ki te tuohu koe me he maunga teitei …

Pursue that which is precious and do not be deterred by anything less than a lofty mountain”.
