Polyphony

Polyphony

(puh-lif-uh-nee) noun

In regards to the programme: an event consisting of two or more simultaneous lines (stories of our young people) of independent melodies coming in together to create a harmony.

Polyphony are projects that enable young people in the community to have a voice through the arts (photography, poetry, graphics, poetry, spoken word and song).

Since 2014, we’ve delivered seven Polyphony events in the North-West of Christchurch and one event in the east.

Every year, the event grows enabling more young people to have the opportunity to take part and have their voices heard. We want to see artwork reaching further to enable for more discussions within the community over the messages behind the art and for more celebrations over the successes and achievements of the young people in the community.

This year, Polyphony will be held in June and will be based on the theme ‘We’re Stronger Together’. There will be workshops during Youth Week (May 8-16) that will contribute to the event and will conclude with a two night exhibition on July 6th and 7th that showcases the art pieces from the young people, hosted by the young people and gives them an opportunity to share the messages behind their work to those attending. These exhibitions will be open for the community to attend for FREE.

Keep an eye on our socials to stay updated.

Our goals:
– young people to come out with more of an understanding of the theme(s)
– young people to feel like they have had their voices heard
– young people have learned about expressing their thoughts and stories through an arts medium
– give young people a safe place to learn, ask questions, have deep discussions, grow and engage in the arts
