Attendance Navigator

Our Attendance Navigators play a key role in supporting rangatahi across East and Central Ōtautahi to re-engage meaningfully with education. Working as part of the Christchurch East and Central Attendance Service (ECAS), this role strengthens the relationships between schools, whānau, and community, ensuring rangatahi are supported with care, consistency, and culturally grounded practice.

Grounded in kaupapa Māori values, Attendance Navigators walk alongside rangatahi who experience ongoing attendance challenges or who are not currently enrolled in school. They help identify the barriers getting in the way, support whānau to navigate complex systems, and create clear pathways back into education or training. This mahi centres mana motuhake, whakapapa, and whānau-led solutions, and requires patience, humour, and genuine care for those who may feel disconnected from education.

Attendance Navigators build trusted relationships with rangatahi, whānau, schools, and community partners; facilitate planning such as Personal Attendance Plans; and contribute to the wider mahi of Te Ora Hou Ōtautahi by uplifting strengths, restoring confidence, and helping create long-term, positive change.

Hapori Navigator

Our Kaitūwhana walk alongside whānau to support their wellbeing, aspirations and long-term stability. Grounded in kaupapa Māori practice and the values of Te Ora Hou Ōtautahi, this role focuses on strengthening whānau connections, restoring mana and helping whānau navigate the systems, services and opportunities available to them.

Kaitūwhana build trusted, mana-enhancing relationships with whānau, meeting kanohi ki te kanohi to understand their strengths, needs and hopes for the future. They support whānau to develop their own plans, respond to challenges and access community resources from housing and education to health, safety and cultural support. This mahi often involves advocating alongside whānau, identifying risks early, supporting crisis responses and helping whānau celebrate progress as they move toward their goals.

Working within a kaupapa Māori framework that honours whakapapa, mana motuhake and whānau-led solutions, Kaitūwhana help create pathways that uplift the wellbeing of individuals, whānau and wider hapori. This role is relational, empowering and deeply connected to our vision of flourishing communities across Ōtautahi.
